DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Law enforcement and the University of Dayton are sharing more details into the multiple incidents that unfurled over the weekend.

On Saturday, March 8, police were called to break up several crowds which led to multiple arrests during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. As investigation continues, officials are sharing more information into what exactly happened.

Dayton police and UD leaders confirm there were two separate incidents that occurred on Saturday.

One occurred on Lowes Street, where first responders received around 44 medical emergency calls. When attempting to get through the crowd was impossible, police were called to disperse the crowd.

“There was not one incident that precipitated the decision to clear the street; instead it was multiple factors, including shifting crowd dynamics, increased medical emergencies, and safety concerns for the crowd and first responders,” said Savalas Kidd, assistant vice president and chief of police at UD.

Police say some attendees resorted to throwing bottles and other items at officers. At least five people were arrested.

There were around 18 hospital transports reported on Saturday in the Lowes Street area. The road was cleared by 5 p.m., where it remained closed for the rest of the evening.

Later that evening, DPD also responded to a report of a large crowd and shots being fired on Brown Street. Officials confirm no one was actually shot, but an officer was injured while attempting to go after a suspect.

The 22-year-old male suspect attempted to flee several times, but was eventually apprehended. He was transported to Montgomery County Jail where he is now facing several charges including Having Weapons while Under Disability, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Receiving Stolen Property (firearm), Obstructing Official Business, and Resisting Arrest.

Several roads were shut down while police attempted to gain control of the situation and then investigate. Roads were reopened around 11:30 p.m.

University officials say there were a total of 12 arrests on campus and in the student neighborhoods on Saturday. UD says out of those 12, only four are registered students of UD.

The University of Dayton released a statement Monday on the incidents, saying in part, “As we remain dedicated to the safety and wellbeing of our campus community, University leadership will meet with our city of Dayton partners to review what happened Saturday and strategies to possibly mitigate future events.”

UD says the students that were involved in the incidents will be held accountable at the university level and to the law.

Investigation is ongoing. 2 NEWS will update as we learn more.
