NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A man was arrested early Wednesday morning after barricading himself inside a New Orleans home, leading to an hours-long standoff with police.

The New Orleans Police Department says around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 22), officers responded to the 1900 block of Allen Street in the Seventh Ward for a domestic disturbance. That’s where police say 21-year-old Yohahn Walker was inside with two firearms, reportedly threatening to kill his family.

According to the NOPD, Walker, who had previously been charged with battery of a police officer, also told police that there would be a shootout if they tried to come into the home. A SWAT roll was then declared.

After multiple failed attempts to get Walker to turn himself in peacefully, the NOPD later deployed tear gas to coerce the suspect out of the home. Walker then fired multiple rounds, striking an armored tactical vehicle.

Nearly 12 hours later, the NOPD said tactical maneuvers were used and Walker was arrested. A search warrant of his home resulted in the recovery of two rifles, a handgun, ammunition, and a ballistic vest.

Walker was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center where he faces charges that include:

  • Criminal damage to property
  • Aggravated assault
  • Attempted second-degree murder of a police officer (2 counts)
  • Illegal use of a dangerous weapon
