(WGNO) – Welcome to the second half of hurricane season. The first half was quiet but activity is now heating up.

The Atlantic has given birth to tropical depression number six, near the coast of Africa.

WGNO meteorologist Jeff Robbins said it is forecast to strengthen to a tropical storm sometime Thursday, which would make it Edouard.

It is forecast to become a category 1 hurricane Sunday. “The great news is that its track keeps it away from land. At this time it looks like a silly little fish storm,” Robbins said.

Closer to home, we have a disturbance over the Bahamas that has a 30 percent chance of developing into a tropical cyclone.

Over the next couple of days, it is expected to move west over south Florida, bringing heavy rain to south Florida, Florida Keys and into the eastern Gulf of Mexico. But thanks to a cold front expected to drop into the Gulf on Saturday, the low should steer clear of Louisiana, Robbins said.
