METAIRIE, La. (WGNO) — WGNO-TV and its parent company, Tribune Media, have received permission from a documentary team to show footage from a film that reportedly shows Orlando mass shooting suspect Omar Mateen.

The footage comes from the documentary The Big Fix which examines the BP oil disaster of 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico.

At about the 36-minute mark, one of the film makers is seen speaking with a security guard at a checkpoint.  That security guard appears to be Mateen.

The film’s co-director, Rebecca Harrell Tickell, released the following statement regarding the footage.

“It has come to our attention that a security guard we spoke with in our documentary “The Big Fix” was Omar Mateen.  We have reached out to law enforcement to provide them with access to the footage should it be helpful to the investigation.  We do not want to add anymore undue attention to the shooter.  Our hearts go out to the families of the victims of the massacre.  We grieve with you.”

Below is a link to the entire documentary.  Again, the footage in question can be found at about the 36-minute mark.

In the clip in question, one of the documentary team’s members attempts to question the security guard, Mateen, at a checkpoint.  The woman asks questions about BP’s operations that were underway beyond the checkpoint.

Mateen asks if the woman has a badge to gain access to the area.  He goes on to tell her that there’s nobody for her to speak with regarding the operations.  He also says, regarding the attitudes of the workers beyond the checkpoint, “Everybody’s just out to get paid.  They’re, like, hoping for more oil to come out and more people to complain so they’ll have the jobs.”

According to reports, Mateen worked for years in the security business and passed multiple background checks despite spending time on a U.S. terrorism watch list.
