NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — You’ve heard the famous song lyrics proclaiming, “These boots are made for walking and that’s just what they’ll do,” but did you know high heels weren’t made for walking?  In fact, they weren’t even originally made for women!

The first reference to high heels dates back to the 10th century.  Persian men wore stylish pumps on horseback, so their feet would fit in the stirrups better.

Plenty of folks still wear heels while horseback riding.  Most cowboy boots still have a good-sized heel.
