NEW ORLEANS (WGNO)— The New Orleans Police Department began investigating a New Orleans East crash that detectives say left multiple people injured Tuesday afternoon.

WGNO responded to the intersection of Chef Menteur Highway and Downman Road around 2:45. Several NOPD units were actively working the scene when our crew arrived.

At least four cars were involved in the crash and a man was taken away in handcuffs. At this time, we know that a man and a woman were taken to the hospital, but details on their condition were unclear.

Surveillance video later obtained from the scene shows the moment a white Ford truck crossed Dowman when a blue car slammed into it, causing it to roll several times. Just moments after, police pulled up to the scene.

People on the scene say the NOPD was chasing the blue car when the crash happened.

WGNO reached out to NOPD and asked if the blue car was stolen or being chased before the crash. A statement said the crash was considered a result of a “possible vehicle pursuit.”

One witness, Ricky Joseph, says he was in a car full of children at the time of the crash.

“The blue car was just driving down the bridge doing 80 or more miles-per-hour, but he was swerving,” said Joseph. “It wasn’t until we literally saw police lights that we noticed that something was happening. But by the time we noticed something was happening, he already crossed over Downman and hit this F150. That car flipped at least 3 times.”

The crash remains under investigation by the NOPD.
