KENNER, La. (WGNO) — A portion of I-10 was shut down for 4 hours in both directions after a chemical spill in Kenner Thursday morning.

Kenner PD reports that the I-10 East between Loyola Drive and Williams Boulevard was closed to traffic while crews worked to resolve the issue.

According to the Kenner Fire Department, the fill cap of a tanker carrying a load of potassium hydroxide wasn’t correctly applied. Anywhere between 5 and 12 gallons of the chemical spilled from the 18-wheeler.

WGNO was told the solution is a volatile chemical, but it was 40 to 50% diluted at the time of the incident.

The closure lasted from about 10:30 a.m. to about 2:30 Thursday afternoon with congestion stretching as far back as far as 13 miles at one point.

Crews from Kenner Fire, Louisiana State Police, and hazmat teams were onsite cleaning up the spill. No injuries were reported and tests on the road came back neutral.

Both lanes of I-10 have since reopened.
