NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University shortstop Collin Burns was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the sixth round (167th overall pick) of the 2021 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Monday.
According to Burns’ advisor, Clarence Johns, Burns has agreed to a deal with the team that is “slightly above the slot.”
Burns becomes the 125th player selected in the MLB Draft in program history. He also extends the Green Wave’s streak to 10 consecutive years with at least one player selected in the MLB Draft.
Burns’ selection by Baltimore marks the second straight season that a Tulane player has been selected by the Orioles. In 2020, Tulane outfielder Hudson Haskin was selected in the second round of the MLB Draft.
Burns joins former Green Wave players Joey Pursell (1980), Sam Amarena (1987), Todd Dyess (1994), Robbie Conway (1994) and Haskin (2020) to be selected by the Baltimore Orioles.
Burns posted a breakout 2021 campaign after he established himself as one of the team’s most valuable players both offensively and defensively. The Metairie, La., native led the team offensively in hits (84), runs scored (55), doubles (20), triples (4), total bases (136) and stolen bases (20).
He is also finished second on the team in home runs (8). Burns continued his strong play into the postseason, as he was the only Green Wave representative on the 2021 AAC All-Tournament team.
Following the year, Burns was showered with numerous postseason awards which included American Athletic Conference First Team, Collegiate Baseball All-America Third Team, ABCA South All-Region First Team and NCBWA All-American, Second Team.
In addition, Burns was tabbed as a Finalist for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year.
