NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The Pelicans filled a need and selected a player who can help right away.

With the 6th pick in Thursday night’s NBA draft, the Pelicans selected Oklahoma shooting guard Buddy Hield, the reigning college player of the year.  Hield scored 32 points in Baton Rouge in a January win over LSU. He averaged 25 points a game, shooting 46 percent from three point land, and 88 percent from the free throw line.

Hield, via satellite tonight, said he is looking forward to playing with Pelicans star forward Anthony Davis:

Hield was the only senior drafted in the first 10 picks of the NBA draft.

In the second round, the Pelicans traded the 39th and 40th selections in the draft, both second round picks, for 19-year-old power forward Cheick Diallo, who was drafted by the Clippers with the 33rd pick.

Diallo, who hails from the African nation of Mali, made one start and played in 27 games as a freshman at Kansas
