COVINGTON, La. (WGNO) — No more scrimmages. No more jamborees. Louisiana high school football week 1 is here and begins Thursday, September 3rd.

An anticipated game to watch on Friday is between traditional rivals Franklinton and Covington. They’ll face off at Jack Salter Stadium. In large school rankings, Franklinton is No. 9. Covington is unranked.

However, the Lions have weapons on both sides of the ball. They have experience and depth on their team. They return 13 starters, which include seven on offense. Running back Devin Brumfield is only a sophomore, but he’s someone to watch. Last season, he scored 14 touchdowns and rushed for 1,267 yards.

Covington head football coach Greg Salter said he is “pleased” with how quarterback Marquell Hollins is progressing. Coach Salter said he looks “poised”. Coach Salter said Hollins is gaining confidence as he continues to get reps.

The Lions are out for revenge after last season’s overtime loss 28-27 to Franklinton. Connor Ackerman kicked a field goal to give the Demons the win.

In Last Friday’s Jamboree matchup, the Demons tied with John Curtis 14-14. Franklinton quarterback Tahj Magee threw an interception and finished 7-of-13 passing for 82 yards.

Lineman Kobe Crain had an excellent game against John Curtis. The senior intercepted Curtis quarterback’s first two passing attempts. The second interception  resulted in a pick six for 36 yards.

Franklinton will have to protect Tahj Magee without a few of last season’s offensive linemen. Adrian Magee signed with LSU and P.J. Burkhalter signed with Nicholls State.

The Demons fell to the eventual champion, Neville, at the Class 4A state semifinals, last season.
