NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Jack Salter Stadium is named after the man who coached the Lions for 33 years. He won 15 district titles and the 1976 State Class 4A Championship.
These days, the 84-year-old Salter is still involved in Covington football. His grandson Greg, a senior on his final team in 1995, is the Lions current head coach.
“When I started coach 15, 18 years ago the first thing he told was a simple thing. Learn every kids` first name” Greg said.
Salters biggest strength may have been the personal relationships that he built with his plaers. That and organization. His meticulously timed practices made sure every player had a chance. Jack said that he made his mind up, and every kid would practice a certain amount of time.
Salter won 256 total games, and his team appeared in 4 state title games. During this time, his grandsons Greg and Glenn were watching their grandfather’s every move.
“I think the thing that inspired me and made me want to be a coach is to see former players come back and visit him” Greg Said.
He is an iconic figure at Covington High School and appropriately the stadium is named after him.
