BATON ROUGE (WGNO) – LSU officially announced Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Matt Canada to fill the same role for the Tigers.
Canada said his offense will be versatile, adapting to the talents of the players.
At the University of Pittsburgh in 2016, Canada’s offenses averaged more than 42 points a game. Pittsburgh was the only school in a power 5 league to score at least 28 points in every game.
LSU scored a total of 10 points in its final two home games.
Canada said the chance to have autonomy to run the offense was a big plus as he discussed the job with LSU head coach Ed Orgeron.
Orgeron said he was deliberate in the process of hiring an offensive coordinator.
Canada will return to Pittsburgh to coach in the Pinstripe Bowl. He will join the LSU staff after the Citrus Bowl Dec. 31.
Canada was fired at North Carolina State after the 2015 season.
“I was surprised, I didn’t see it coming,” said Canada. “We were third in the league in scoring, but people make changes, and I am fortunate because I am standing here talking to you right now.”
