Many people believe in the power of feng shui to maintain balance and manage energies in homes and gardens, but did you know the ancient Chinese philosophy also can be applied to travel? I asked New York City feng shui expert Elesia Carey for some specifics on finding my travel zen. Here are her top tips.

First, between flights, engage in soothing yin yoga stretches and walking. Reapply moisturizer and drink lots of water. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and salty, fried foods. It’s all tempting to a weary traveler, but can add even more stress to the abundance of yang fire energy found at the airport.

Second, eat small meals, focusing on earth and water element foods. Sushi is ideal, with its balance of sweet rice, fish, and seaweed. Whenever possible, pack or purchase snacks made from nutritious plants such as sweet potatoes and fruits. When you’re on the go, even sweet potato fries or chips count, and I always travel with dried fruits.

For some portable zen, carry a couple of small crystals when you are away from home. Clear quartz and rose quartz are excellent choices, as are black tourmaline for protection, or kyanite for balancing. You can incorporate the crystals into your journey subtly with your jewelry choices, or carry small tumbled crystals in your pockets.

Next on the list for “feng shui on-the-go’: essential oils. Whether you’re flying, driving or taking a cruise, carry lavender oil to refresh your energy. Lavender also has strong protective properties. Experiment with different essential oils and when you find something you like, keep a zen diary with notes as to which scents strengthen your energy field the most.

Finally, once you’re back in New Orleans, try to unpack your luggage in a timely manner. Any amount of time away from home gives us a new perspective and a fresh start of sorts. Don`t allow those energies to stall by letting your bags to sit on the floor begging to be emptied. Unpack, do that laundry, and put away toiletries as soon as possible.
