St. Tammany Council votes ‘yes’ to increase Causeway toll

Debate led to a vote in favor of the Causeway Commission's plan Thursday night.

MANDEVILLE, La. (WGNO) – We’re a step closer to seeing toll increases on the Causeway, after a 9-4 vote by the St. Tammany Parish Council in favor of supporting the issuance of toll revenue bonds needed to make the Causeway Commission’s safety enhancement plan a reality.

Heated debate led up to the vote, with several angry and disapproving comments from parish residents.

Money raised — not to exceed $133 million — would pay for safety measures that have been approved by the Causeway Commission, including additional safety bays and higher railings.

If the plan comes to fruition, tolls for tag holders will be increased by one dollar, to $3.

Cash customers will see a two dollar increase, to $5.

The resolution still needs Jefferson Parish approval before it heads to the bond commission.
