NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — None of the four candidates on the ballot for lieutenant governor secured the necessary 50% of the vote to win outright.
With 99% of precincts reporting, Democrat Melvin “Kip” Holden and Republican “Billy” Nungesser advanced to the November 21 runoff election, after being neck-and-neck throughout the night.
Holden, the Mayor-President of East Baton Rouge Parish, took 33 percent of the vote. Nungesser, President of Plaquemines Parish, was slightly behind with 30 percent.
Both men hope to succeed lame-duck Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne, who lost out in the state’s gubernatorial race.
Jefferson Parish President John Young, Republican, lagged too far behind to catch up to either Holden or Nungesser, finishing his race with 29%.
State Sen. Elbert Guillory (R-Opelousas) rounded out the field far behind the others, taking just eight percent.
