BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Jeff Landry is running for Louisiana Governor.

Landry, the two-term Republican Attorney General, made the announcement Wednesday morning.

Landry is the first candidate to officially announce plans to succeed John Bel Edwards as governor.

“We deserve a government as good as our people, and we’re not getting it,” said Landry.

Jeff Landry has been fundraising for this campaign for weeks already – but now it’s official – just about a year away from the gubernatorial election.

Landry launched his campaign with a video detailing a laundry list of issues he is “tired of” and looks to change should he be elected.

“We have in Louisiana right now is a complete crisis of leadership and a lack of priorities,” Landry said.

In the video he brings up statistics of children struggling to read or do basic math and blames “liberal school boards” for forcing an agenda and not teaching kids well enough.

And attributes poor government for the high crime rates across the state.

“Incompetent mayors and woke district attorneys are playing a dangerous game of catch and release. In New Orleans, people are scared to pump gas and walk to their cars. Our capital city has one of the highest murder rate in the nation,” Landry said.

Landry has served as the Louisiana Attorney General since 2016, before that he served as a congressman for two years from 2010-2012 before Louisiana lost one of its seats. Once voted one of the most conservative members of congress – he now looks to take Louisiana’s highest office.

“I’m tired of people leaving our state, and I’m angry that our children’s education is not a priority. I’m sick of our big cities being run like third world nations,” Landry said.

The election for Louisiana governor is set for October 14, 2023, with a runoff election scheduled for November 18.

Louisiana Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser has indicated that he’ll likely run in the 2023 election but hasn’t made it official.
