NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The race for governor of Louisiana is headed to a runoff between Republicans David Vitter and Democrat John Bel Edwards.
With 100% of precincts reporting statewide, Edwards led the pack of candidates with 40% of the vote. Vitter received 23% of the votes.
However, neither received the needed percentage of the vote to be declared winner outright.
A runoff election between the two candidates will be held November 21.
Nine names were on the ballot for the race.
The other candidates included Jay Dardenne, Scott Angelle, Beryl Billiot, Cary Deaton, Jeremy “J.W.” Odom, Eric Paul Orgeron, and S.L. Simpson.
Vitter currently represents Louisiana in the U.S. Senate. He has been a senator since 2005. Before joining the Senate, he represented LA 1st District in Baton Rouge.
John Bel Edwards is currently the State Representative for District 72. He also practices law at his firm with his nephew in Amite. He served in the Army from 1986 until 1996. He lives with his family in Roseland.
