NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – A record number of Louisiana residents have cast votes during the early voting period for the 2016 presidential election, which ends tomorrow.

More than 366,000, or 12 percent, of the 3 million registered voters in Louisiana had cast votes by Saturday afternoon, according to the Louisiana Secretary of State.

That number tops early voting totals from the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections, even with a day to go in the current voting period.

A report published Friday morning showed that the majority of votes statewide up to that point were cast by women and Democrats.

That trend has held up statewide, with about 20,000 more Democrats than Republicans casting ballots already, and women have cast over 51,000 more early votes than men.

Locally, Democrats had outvoted Republicans in Orleans Parish by 700 percent as of Friday, a trend that continued throughout the weekend.

As of Saturday, only 3,368 Republicans had voted in Orleans Parish, while over 26,000 registered Democrats made it to the polls early.

The numbers are much closer in Jefferson Parish, with 8,959 Republicans casting votes compared to 11,425 Democrats. The opposite is true in St. Tammany Parish, however, with 16,816 registered Republicans voting compared to 7,849 Democrats.

Nearly 13,000 Orleans Parish residents flocked to polling stations between Friday morning and the end of the day on Saturday. In St. Tammany Parish, the voting tally jumped by 12,000, and almost 10,000 additional votes were cast in Jefferson Parish.

Six constitutional amendments are also on the ballot, as well as more than 220 races statewide involving 728 candidates.
