NEW ORLEANS (WGNO)- Sabrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin is in New Orleans to speak to young people at The Rally for Excellence tomorrow.

InspireNOLA Charter Schools is the sponsor of the rally to encourage students to use education as a vehicle to end youth violence.

Fulton spoke with WGNO today about her feelings on the recent police shootings in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Charlotte, N.C.

“(I feel) pain, hurt, sadness that this is continuing to happen,” Fulton said.  “It doesn’t really matter to me what city, it’s just that I know that that family will be going through a great deal of disappointment.  I know what I went through four years ago, and I continue to go through with my son and I just feel for the family.  My heart goes out to them.”

Trayvon Martin was 17 and unarmed when George Zimmerman shot and killed him in a gated community in Sanford, Florida, in 2012. Zimmerman was a neighborhood watch captain who claimed it was self defense. He was charged with second-degree murder, but a jury found him not guilty.

Martin’s death sparked national outrage and protests across the country, much like the clashes in Charlotte this week after officers shot and killed people there and in Tulsa.
