The New Orleans Mid-City Library has a new home. And it’s a nice one.
The Mid-City Library is now located in the old Automotive Life Insurance building at 4140 Canal Street near Carrollton Avenue.
Community leaders and a few students from Phillis Wheatley Community School cut the ceremonial ribbon in front of the modernist building this morning (Dec. 13).
The Automotive Life Insurance building is a historic landmark, designed in 1963 by the same architects responsible for the Superdome and the Main Library. Today, it holds more than 14,800 books, audiobooks, DVDs, and CDs. Its two stories are enough room for a children’s room, a dedicated teen space, and a large meeting room available for community events.
The library branch bounced around after the storm, opening in 2007 in a retail area on North Carrollton Avenue, then moving to the American Can Building on Orleans Avenue.
The Mid-City Library is open Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Friday & Saturday 10 a.m.-5p.m.
