Fresh seafood brought to you by the aquarium, sort of! It’s the new app designed by The Food Group for the Audubon Nature Institute’s sustainable seafood program G.U.L.F. (Gulf United for Lasting Fisheries.) “We wanted to make sure people had an easy way when they’re at the store or out at a restaurant to double-check and make sure that they’re buying Gulf seafood if they’re looking for Gulf seafood, make sure they know what’s in season at the time, what’s fresh and then also allow them to find Gulf seafood easily through access to our restaurant partners we work with,” says John Fallon.
Simply open the app and this valuable information is at your fingertips. “So we have profiles on popular shellfish species like oysters, shrimp, blue crab and then a lot of fin fish species grouper, red drum, black drum. You can actually check the profiles of the species for when it’s in season. We have a freshness guide you can check so you can see what to look for, what the sheen on it is, how heavy it’s supposed to be, water content.”
It also acts as your personal dining guide, listing restaurants that serve gulf seafood. “So we have access to the restaurants, their web pages, maps so you can locate them easily and you can even call straight from the app to make a reservation,” says Fallon.
The app is free, easy to use and useful year-round, it’s a convenient tool to have on the go. Android users can download the app through Google Play, iPhone users can get the app from iTunes.
