NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — On Monday, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, CAO Gilbert Montano, and Economic Development Director Jeff Schwartz discuss the latest updates on the City’s economic development.

The topic of the discussion was the future of the former Six Flags/Jazzland site in New Orleans East. The theme park closed days before Hurricane Katrina made landfall in 2005, and the property has since been abandoned. However, as Mayor Cantrell said in the press conference, things are about to change.

With the city’s RFP Evaluation Committee meeting just hours before Monday afternoon’s press conference, the city selected Bayou Phoenix, LLC to develop the property into a thriving location.

During the press conference, Mayor Cantrell commented on the announcement, saying;

“This project is in clear allignment with our overall goal of driving vibrant recovery and creating, again, a more diverse and equitable economy for our people.”

While the development is in the early stages, Bayou Phoenix’s proposal plan projects construction to begin sometime in late 2022 or 2023.
