NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A teenager is dead after a crash along the New Orleans lakefront late Monday evening.

The New Orleans Police Department says the crash happened just before 10 p.m. near the intersection of Lakeshore Drive and Rail Street, just north of the Lake Shore neighborhood. When police arrived, they found a 17-year-old boy unresponsive at the scene of the crash.

Detectives say an early investigation indicated a female driver of a late Ford Explorer model was traveling west on Lakeshore Drive when she reportedly lost control of the SUV. The Explorer then veered into the lane of oncoming traffic and struck a pole, causing the car to overturn.

The 17-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.

Police say four other people, including the driver, were all taken to an area hospital for treatment. None of their ages were disclosed. They have all since been listed in stable condition.

The crash remains under investigation by the NOPD. Anyone with any additional information regarding the crash is urged to contact detectives at 504-821-2222 or 504-822-1111.
