NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — New Orleans police have arrested a man after a shooting that left a child injured on Sunday (Oct. 2) afternoon. According to the NOPD, 25-year-old Lindell Mays has been charged with a firearms violation in connection to the incident.

Around 4 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to the intersection of South Claiborne Ave. and General Taylor St. It was there that police found a four-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound. The boy was transferred by EMS to an area hospital for treatment and has since been listed in stable condition.

Police later learned that the child’s gunshot wound was self-inflicted. Mays was subsequently charged with Responsibilities of Owners of Firearms with Respect to Minors and booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center.
