NEW ORLEANS (WGNO)— Multiple agencies from Orleans and St. Bernard parishes responded to a crash on Paris Road Monday that killed one person and sent multiple people to the hospital.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, the crash happened just before 1 p.m. Our WGNO News team responded to the accident, which was revealed to be located just across the street from the Texaco truck stop only a short distance north of the parish line.

Details released by the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office say the crash involved a dump truck and a silver Toyota Camry. When deputies arrived, the dump truck was overturned on the shoulder of the road and the Toyota’s engine was on fire with two women trapped inside.

According to an early investigation by the NOPD, the driver of the Toyota was headed north on Paris Road when the oncoming dump truck made a left turn in the direct pathway of the car, causing the two to collide. The Camry caught on fire as a result of the crash.

The SBSO says that with some help from nearby citizens, the two women were pulled from the burning car, which later became fully engulfed in flames. The two women, a five-year-old boy who was also riding in the Toyota, and the driver of the dump truck, a 71-year-old man, were all taken to the hospital as a result.

One of the women, revealed to be a 39-year-old, later died at the hospital around 3 p.m. Her identity has not yet been released. The other woman, whose age was unclear, was last listed in critical condition. Both the boy and the driver were last reported to be in stable condition.

The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office and NOPD both responded to the crash along with fire departments from their respective areas. The NOPD is the lead investigator in the crash.
