LIST: School and business closures due to Hurricane Ida

As of Friday, August 27, the following closures have been reported:

SCHOOLS

DELGADO

Due to the effects on our region from Hurricane Ida, Delgado Community College will remain closed through Sept. 10 with virtual instruction and remote work Sept. 13-24. Technical, nursing, and other hands-on instruction may have different arrangements. Details at www.dcc.edu.


UNIVERSITY OF NEW ORLEANS (UNO)

The University of New Orleans will resume fall 2021 classes on Monday, September 13. All classes until Monday, September 20 will be delivered online, meaning there will be no in-person classes during the first week. This will be done to assist students and employees who are still evacuated or not yet able to return to campus.

SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY OF NEW ORLEANS (SUNO)

The university has announced that it plans to return to classes on Monday, September 13. Stay updated by following the SUNO Facebook page.

UNIVERSITY OF HOLY CROSS

UHC’s campus will remain closed until Saturday, September 18. Saturday classes will resume on September 18 with weekday classes resuming on Monday, September 20.  This is inclusive of both remote and on-campus classes.

All assignment due dates will be adjusted as a result of the school’s closure.

SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY BATON ROUGE

Southern University’s Baton Rouge campuses remain closed through Labor Day (September 6) due to Hurricane Ida. This includes Southern University and A&M College, Southern University Law Center, and Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center. Normal operations are expected to resume on Tuesday, September 7.

NORTHSHORE TECHNICAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Northshore Technical Community College Campuses will remain closed through Monday, September 6th. 

NUNEZ COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Nunez Community College will remain closed through Monday, September 6th. Students should continue to check nunez.edu for additional updates. 

NEW ORLEANS PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Today, NOLA Public Schools and its school leaders announced that public schools in New Orleans will reopen to students between Sept. 15 and Sept. 22 as the community recovers from the impact of Hurricane Ida. All schools will notify their students’ families about when their campuses will reopen by Friday, Sept. 10.

ARCHDIOCESE OF NEW ORLEANS

Due to the impacts of Hurricane Ida, all Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of New Orleans will be closed to both in-person and virtual learning through at least Monday, September 6. Archdiocesan and school leaders will spend the next week assessing damage and planning. Parents are asked to be aware of any communications that may come from their child(ren)’s school for school-specific information.

JEFFERSON PARISH SCHOOLS

Jefferson Parish Schools will remain closed during the week of September 6. The campus will remain closed until further notice.

PLAQUEMINES PARISH PUBLIC SCHOOLS

On Tuesday, September 14, 2021, all PPSB schools in the Belle Chasse community will reopen. 

South Plaquemines High School, South Plaquemines Elementary, Boothville-Venice Elementary, the Plaquemines Parish Learning Center, and Phoenix High School will begin school at a later date.

ST. BERNARD PARISH PUBLIC SCHOOLS

 St. Bernard Parish Public schools and offices will reopen on Monday, September 13, 2021, for students, teachers, and support personnel.

ST. TAMMANY PARISH PUBLIC SCHOOLS

CLosed indefinitely. The St. Tammany Parish Public School System is continuing to evaluate our 55 schools and multiple sites for damage. We are working closely with power companies, but do not have a timeline for full power restoration yet. “If you evacuated for the storm, please rest assured that we will give you plenty of time to return when we are ready to reopen schools,” said Superintendent Frank Jabbia. 

WASHINGTON PARISH SCHOOLS

Washington Parish Schools will resume on September 7.

BELLE CHASSE ACADEMY

Belle Chasse Academy will be open for normal school hours beginning Monday, September 13. All staff and students should plan to return on this date. Buses will be running usual routes and times. Currently, we do not have phone or internet service. We will let staff and families know when the services are up and running.

GRAND ISLE SCHOOL

Grand Isle School is closed indefinitely.

WALDORF SCHOOL OF NEW ORLEANS

Waldorf School of New Orleans plans to reopen both its campuses on Monday, September 13 presuming Entergy’s power restoration projections are accurate and remain on schedule.

INTERNATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL OF NEW ORLEANS

International High School of New Orleans has canceled ALL in-person and remote classes until further notice.

ST. GEORGE’S EPISCOPAL SCHOOL

St. George’s Episcopal School will remain closed through Labor Day.

NORTHLAKE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

Will reopen campus on Thursday, September 9 for all students and athletic facilities.

McGEHEE SCHOOL AND LITTLE GATE

School has set a target reopening date for September 13. Read the schools’ full statement HERE.

TRINITY EPISCOPAL SCHOOL

Trinity Episcopal School will reopen Monday, September 13. We will be open regular hours and fully operational. 


BUSINESSES

CONTEMPORARY ARTS CENTER OF NEW ORLEANS

CAC announced the closing of its galleries and theatre from Friday, August 27 through Tuesday, August 31, 2021. The planned opening of “SOLOS,” scheduled for Friday, August 27, 2021 from 6 to 9pm has been postponed. Additionally, the CAC’s virtual panel discussion “(Re)membering to Never Forget,” scheduled for Sunday, August 29 from 2 to 4 pm has also been postponed. Postponement dates have not yet been announced. CAC galleries are scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, September 1, 2021.

JEAN LAFITTE NATIONAL HISTORIC PARK AND PRESERVE AND NEW ORLEANS JAZZ NATIONAL HISTORIC PARK

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve and New Orleans Jazz National
Historical Park will close as of noon on Friday August 27, 2021, due to the threat of Hurricane Ida. No
decision has been reached as to a reopening date.

LOUISIANA STATE PARKS CLOSING AT 5 P.M. FRIDAY

Friday, August 27 – Louisiana State Parks will close multiple state park recreation sites and state historic sites to visitors ahead of Tropical Storm/Hurricane Ida. These facilities will remain closed until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 31.

CITY OF GRETNA

The following city buildings will be closed on Monday, August 30:

Mayor’s court, as well as normal business hours for Gretna City Hall and Gretna Clerk of court will resume on
Tuesday, August 31.

Garbage collection will be suspended on Monday, August 30, and will resume as normal on Thursday, September 2. Please make sure that your garbage cans and recycling bins are put away and secured.

All city departments, including the Gretna Police Department and the David Crockett Fire Department, are prepared and stand ready for this storm.

STATE OF LOUISIANA — SOUTH LOUISIANA OFFICES

State offices in the following parishes will be closed Wednesday, September 1:

Ascension, Assumption, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Jefferson, Lafourche, Livingston, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. Helena, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Terrebonne, Washington and West Felician

ST. JOHN PARISH

All St. John Parish offices will be closed on Monday, August 30, 2021. Parish offices will reopen on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at 8:00 a.m. Sandbag locations will reopen at 9 a.m. on Saturday until weather permits.

REGIONAL TRANSIT AUTHORITY (RTA)

The RTA announced the suspension of streetcar service beginning Saturday, August 28 at 3 a.m. in advance of Hurricane Ida impacting New Orleans. Temporary bus service will operate along all streetcar routes.

The agency also encourages essential travel only. RTA will waive fares across all modes as operations maintain for residents finalizing hurricane preparedness and getting to their place of shelter.
