NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – A broken water main on the corner of Veterans and Williams Boulevards in Kenner has opened a sinkhole in the middle of the busy intersection.

The City of Kenner released a warning to motorists this afternoon advising everyone to avoid the intersection due to “the accidental rupture of a water main.”

Shortly after, a Twitter user posted a picture of what he called a “massive sinkhole” in the intersection:

The City of Kenner had earlier released pictures of water overflowing through the drainage system in the area.

All eastbound traffic on Veterans at Williams is being diverted north and south on Williams while westbound Veterans traffic is being diverted back east at Georgia. There is currently only one northbound Williams lane open.

Traffic will be restricted at the busy intersection through Thursday evening at the earliest, according to the city of Kenner.

The Kenner Police Department released a video of the gaping sinkhole.
