NEW ORLEANS – NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson holds a media briefing to provide an update on the October 30 incident at the intersection of Royal and St. Philip streets, where two NOPD officers were fired upon and injured.

On Monday afternoon, NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson held a media briefing to provide an update on this incident.

Officer Trevor Abney is in good spirits, but is still under hospital care. Chief Ferguson says the current concern is whether he will regain full vision, as he was shot in the face.

Officer Brooke Duncan IV was treated at the hospital for minor lacerations he received from glass shattered by bullets.

The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Donnell Hassell, is being charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer.

Chief Ferguson says at this time, they are not aware of any motive.

On Saturday, the New Orleans Police Department released the following statement:

“The NOPD can confirm that Police Officer Trevor Abney was struck by gunfire during an incident yesterday (October 30, 2020) at the intersection of Royal and St. Philip Street. Abney is assigned to the Eighth District and has been with the NOPD since 2015.

We do not have an update on Officer Abney’s medical condition, nor do we have any additional information on this investigation at this time.”

NEW ORLEANS – The NOPD is investigating a shooting that sent two police officers to the hospital.

The initial call of an officer in need of assistance came in around 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

According to NOPD Chief Shaun Ferguson, the officers were on a routine patrol when they were ambushed by a man riding as a passenger in a pedicab.

The NOPD officer who was shot is a 4-year-veteran of the force. He sustained a gunshot wound to the face, and is in serious but stable condition.

A second officer, a 16-year-veteran of the force, received minor abrasions.

Both officers were transported to a local hospital by a fellow NOPD officer.

Supt. Ferguson says the suspect, who appeared to have a medical condition, was transported to the hospital, in custody.

Chief Ferguson commended the officers, for maintaining professionalism, by not firing their weapons in this incident.

“A retired Army veteran with medical experience was working in a nearby store and helped with the medical treatment of our officers until fellow officers arrived at the scene,” Ferguson said. “We want to thank her, as well as citizens who helped to point out the perpetrator to officers responding to this scene.”
