New Orleans (WGNO)–Covenant House and Habitat for Humanity have teamed up to help young adults get back on their feet.
Covenant House graduates will now live in duplex apartments built by the Habitat team with young adults on one side and a mentor on the other.
The first Covenant House tenant got the keys to his new place yesterday on Urquhart Street in the Seventh Ward.
Habitat for Humanity’s Jim Pate said, “This is a new and unique program that’s designed to address specific needs and particularly in a city where the cost of rent is so extraordinary high and this allows us to let these young folks get a great start for the next step in their journey.”
Covenant House will assist with the rent, but eventually the tenants are expected to take full responsibility for it.
This is the first house of its kind in the country.
The program plans to expand to help more young adults in need.
