NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Carnival Cruise Lines is expanding its service from New Orleans. The company is trading out the “Elation” with the “Triumph” in April 2016, which will expand capacity on four and five-day cruises by 34%.

On the Triumph’s Mexico route, four-day cruises will depart Thursdays and call at Cozumel while the five-day cruises will depart Mondays and Saturdays, visiting Cozumel and Progreso.

Carnival Triumph will join Carnival Dream, which operates year-round seven-day cruises from New Orleans.

Together, the ships are expected to carry 450,000 guests annually from the Crescent City, which is the most of any cruise operator.

You may remember a series of mishaps on board the Triumph.

In 2013, a fire stranded that ship in the Gulf of Mexico for several days, leaving thousands of people without power, air conditioning or working toilets.

Later that year, a dockworker was killed in Mobile Bay after the ship broke loose from its moorings while being cleaned up and repaired.

The ship has undergone extensive renovations and added what they called “Fun Ship 2.0” innovations, which include Guy’s Burger Joint, BlueIguana Tequila Bar, RedFrog Rum Bar, BlueIguana Cantina, cocktail pharmacy-themed Alchemy Bar and Cherry On Top candy store.

Triumph also features more than 500 staterooms and suites with private balconies.
