NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Three NOPD officers were fired and a fourth was suspended for their roles in striking a handcuffed prisoner last year.

According to NOPD, the following officers were terminated after a disciplinary hearing today:

-Alfred Moran – most recently assigned to 8th District

-Lewis Simmons – most recently assigned to 8th District

-Christopher Jennings – most recently assigned to 3rd District.

Jerry Tyler, of the 8th District, was suspended for five days without pay.

Body camera footage from Sept. 30, 2015, shows Moran striking a handcuffed prisoner while he was sitting on a bench inside the Eighth District Station.

Moran was the only officer who hit the suspect. The other officers saw the beating, but failed to report it to supervisors.

“I expect our officers to follow the law, to follow our policies and our training and to be honest. I am extremely disappointed that these officers did not perform to our standards,” Police Chief Michael Harrison said in a news release.

NOPD has since implemented new use-of-force policies that “clearly state” the requirements for reporting excessive force, NOPD said.
