NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club Inc., hosted the first annual Zulu on the Bayou Festival held on the banks of the Historic Bayou St. John in Mid-City. Encompassing the elements of the neighborhood and community, Zulu showcased the best local artists combined with delectable Creole and soul food offerings from some of the city’s finest vendors.
The festival was dedicated to moms who lost children to violence.
Representatives of the organization believe it to be a party with a purpose.
“We looked at an opportunity to be a partner in the community and really honor what the mothers in the community. We thought we should come out and be a shining light to really represent what Zulu organization is all about, and make our community proud. We believe if we change the community you can change the city,” remarked Zulu’s lawyer, Kenya Rounds.
Zulu is a non-profit 501 (c) 7 community-based organization. Since 1909 Zulu has been a part of the fabric of the City of New Orleans. World-renowned for its annual Mardi Gras parade, Zulu has been a leader and cultural icon for more than century.
Over the course of the years, Zulu has been known for its deep community ties. No stranger to giving back, this festival will offer the very best of New Orleans to all Mothers of our community. Zulu will also observe a moment of silence dedicated to mothers that have lost children due to violence in our city.
The vendors featured clothing and jewelry that support women globally, with South African imported merchandise that returned part of the proceeds to the women of South Africa.
