BATON ROUGE (WGNO) – The state’s Law Enforcement Survivor Benefit Board today approved the state-issued benefits for the families of the three fallen officers in Baton Rouge.
The families of Matthew Gerald, Montrell Jackson and Brad Garafola will each receive $250,000, plus $25,000 for each child and free books and tuition at public colleges. All of the benefits are tax-free.
Similar benefits are paid to the families of any officer or firefighter who dies in the line of duty in Louisiana.
“It’s not so much about the money, but knowing there is financial help coming their way,” Attorney General Jeff Landry said. “The last thing we want them to do during this time of grieving is to worry about money.”
There have also been countless private fundraisers held to help the fallen officers’ families, as well as the three officers who were injured in the shooting. Click here to see a list of places to donate.
