CONVENT, La. (WGNO) – Today, volunteers from the Red Cross will be in storm-damaged areas to coordinate with parish leaders to establish needs and provide services.

Red Cross teams worked through the night at Shelters in both St. James and St. John Parishes and served drinks and hot meals to first responders in Convent.

As day breaks and residents in some areas return to evaluate the damage to their homes, the Red Cross asks that you observe these common sense safety guidelines:

  • Return only when authorities say that it is safe to do so.
  • Watch out for fallen power lines or broken gas lines and report them to the utility company immediately.
  • Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and sturdy shoes when examining your walls, doors, staircases and windows for damage.
  • If you smell gas or hear a blowing or hissing noise, open a window and get everyone out of the building quickly and call the gas company or fire department.
  • Take pictures of damage both of your home and its contents for insurance claims.

St. James Parish Government has set up a shelter at the Lutcher Senior Center located at 2631 Louisiana Avenue.

Red Cross volunteers are there to assist families in need.
