NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – An online fundraising account has been set up for the family of Demontris Toliver, the 25-year-old shot and killed on Bourbon Street over the weekend.

The GoFundMe account has a goal of $10,000, which the family says will help pay funeral expenses.

Toliver’s sister-in-law Lanicia Smith wrote about Toliver’s final minutes on the site.

Demontris was hit and his 21 year old fiancé had to hold his hand while he lay on the pavement bleeding,” Smith wrote. “He did not survive the shooting and was pronounced dead this morning. This was a senseless act of violence that is wreaking havoc on our entire family. A life taken for no reason.”

Toliver did not have a life insurance policy, according to Smith, and the money raised will go toward his funeral expenses.

“We are begging for help and anything will be of help,” she wrote. “Thank you to anyone who can offer assistance.”
