Suspicious device found at New Orleans East construction site contained no explosive materials

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – NOPD is leading an investigation after a suspicious device was discovered and detonated at a construction site in New Orleans East.

The device was blown up in a controlled explosion around 2 p.m. in the 7700 block of Grant Street.

“It did appear to be and have the components that we would consider to be some sort of bomb, but it was found to not have any explosive material in it,” says Aaron Miller, Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness for the City of New Orleans.

At about 11:30 a.m., NOPD officers received a call of a possible bomb found by construction workers at the Ernest M. Morial Elementary School site. Some 150 workers were evacuated. NOPD Bomb Squad officers,  NOFD personnel and EMS workers were on the scene — but there were no injuries.

The Homeland Security director says there was no danger to the public, and that law enforcement teams acted  in every way possible to “neutralize” any possible threat as soon as possible.
