NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — In August of 2015, the NOPD announced it would team-up with the New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation to begin installing private security cameras at neighbors’ homes. One year later, the department reports nearly 200 high-definition cameras are now part of the program.
The program is called Adopt-A-Block. It targets crime hotspots in the city.
The cameras can be found at homes, schools, and churches.
Each of the cameras is registered with the NOPD. In the event of a crime occurring nearby, officers can check security cameras in the area for evidence.
The cameras are paid for with private donations. In the first year of the program, the NOPJF raised $85,000 in donations.
