NOPD: 30 guns taken off the street during 2016 Mardi Gras patrols

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – The NOPD say patrol officers confiscated 30-guns on or near the parade route during the Carnival season.

They report that the weapons were confiscated in 17 separate incidents over the last 12 days and resulted in 25 arrests.

There was a handful of shooting incidents along the parade route, but no fatalities were reported in any of those shootings.

NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison had this to say about the department’s aggressive enforcement of the “No Firearms” law on parade routes:

“We had a zero tolerance policy for anyone who made the decision to bring a weapon to Carnival and put our residents and visitors in danger, and our results show it.

Over the past 12 days, our officers have shown focused and impressive police work that undoubtedly prevented violent situations from happening. I commend the work of the men and women of the NOPD and thank our law enforcement partners for their assistance.

We are committed to continuing the aggressive and proactive approach throughout the year.”
