METAIRIE, LA (WGNO)  — Wednesday afternoon friends, family, and coworkers of Eric Gustafson gathered to pay their last respects. Gustafson was from the New Orleans area and worked as a firefighter in Meridian, Mississippi. Last Friday night, Sept. 9, at about 9:00, Gustafson was riding on one of the Meridian Fire Department’s truck that was making on a routine call.  But the truck crashed.  Gustafson died from his injuries, and two other firefighters were injured. During Wednesday’s funeral mass at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Metairie, Gustafson’s brother told the crowd that while some heroes wear capes and tights, Eric wore boots and a badge.  He also said that his brother’s greatest love of his life was his daughter, Jessica Lynn. After the funeral mass, the fire chief of Meridian said he was too shaken by the events of the past few days to speak on camera about Gustafson’s death. Gustafson’s final resting place will be next to his grandparents at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.  People are asked to share their memories of Gustafson on the Tribute Wall at www.ejfieldingfh.com. Eric Gustafson was 40 years old.
