EASTERN NEW ORLEANS, La. (WGNO) – You could save big this weekend on back to school purchases this summer if you wait until Friday.

Friday kicks off Louisiana’s Annual Sales Tax Holiday.

Shoppers say they’re hoping to save as much money as they can.

Grandmother Gwendolyn Singleton was shopping for school supplies with her Grandaughter and says the list for back to school supplies is lengthy.

“One sturdy backpack, two twelve packs of pencils, lead pencils are not permitted. One pack of Expo dry erase markers, one pencil pack,” says Singleton.

One mother says she’s spent an arm and a leg already and there’s still more spending to be done.

“I’ve spent about 200 to 250 dollars,” says Kristie Jackson.

And taking advantage of the tax-free weekend is one thing you may want to consider, but there are some rules to be aware of.”

You can only spend up to $2,500 per person. Second, the Holiday applies only to the four percent state sales tax. Third, under Louisiana law, the Annual Sales Tax Holiday begins on the first consecutive Friday and Saturday each August.

The state timed the Tax Holiday to coincide with back to school savings but keep in mind electronics are on the list too.

But there are some exemptions.

You still have to pay full price for groceries and food items.

Hotel occupancy, recreational activities and laundry services are also exempt from the Tax Holiday.
