New Orleans (WGNO) – Despite the wind, rain, and dark clouds, the Al Copeland Concert Meadow at Lafreniere Park was an oasis of rhythm and respect Monday.
Blue sky sightings were short and sweet, but no one lost sight of the meaning behind this event.
“Yes, I’m a proud American, very proud American,” said Tari Autin, who is married to a veteran, and who also is the mother of a veteran.
Hats were removed and hands were placed over hearts as the organizer of the event, Chad Pitfield, spoke about the importance of Memorial Day and Taps played.
“We were crossing our fingers and hoping that the weather would comply with us but we haven’t had that luck today, but we have adapted,” said Pitfield.
Those who braved the weather for the Memorial Day Jam got VIP treatment: close, covered seats.
“We are happy that they are out here and enjoying it, so we moved the tent to give them some cover. We usually use it for the Sheriff’s Office but we gave it to the people today to let them have some cover,” said Jefferson Parish Councilman Ben Zahn.
Die-hard music fans shrugged off the storms.
“Music is more important than the weather, absolutely,” said one happy concert-goer, while her daughter smiled under a broken purple umbrella.
“It’s been raining ever since we came here,” laughed the little girl.
The band 90 Degrees West basically played a private party. Earlier in the day, 3 O’clock Thunder was on stage. The next big music event scheduled for Lafreniere Park is the Uncle Sam Jam, on July 3rd.
