Judge: New Orleans Confederate monuments will stay up until appeals process is complete

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Four Confederate monuments in New Orleans cannot be removed until all appeals have been exhausted the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Friday.

The New Orleans City Council voted last December to remove the Robert E. Lee statue, the P.G.T. Beauregard statue, a statue of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and a monument honoring the Battle of Liberty Place.

The Monumental Task Committee issued this statement:

“We appreciate the unanimous decision of the panel of federal judges, which acknowledges that removing the monuments is premature. This action will allow for a full review of the constitutional and statutory issues at stake in this case. Ultimately, the monuments will remain in place until the merits of the case are heard,” reports MTC Board President, Pierre McGraw.
