‘Guns don’t kill people, microphones kill people:’ Mel Gibson talks gun control while in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO)- Hollywood heavyweight, Mel Gibson is the director of the new inspirational film, “Hacksaw Ridge.”  There was a special screening in New Orleans at the National World War II Museum on Wednesday night.

The film is a true story about Desmond Doss, who was awarded the medal of honor for his heroic efforts in Okinawa during World War II.  Doss was a religious man and didn’t believe in using guns.  When he went to WW2, he enlisted as a medic, but he refused to use a gun.  He decided saving lives was better than taking lives.  Doss ended up saving 75 of his fellow soldiers.  In the movie, Andrew Garfield plays Doss.

For Gibson, this movie brings up the important issue of gun control.

“There are certain things about gun control that need to change because it is out of hand, sometimes.  I understand the right to bear arms.  I get it.  I’m all for it, all for the Constitution, but perhaps some guidelines will help,” he said.

“Hacksaw Ridge” opens in theaters on Friday, November 4th.
