Back-to back-fires gut Buttermilk Drop Bakery

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – A bakery near the Lakefront caught fire twice overnight.

The first incident at the Buttermilk Drop Bakery on the corner of Robert E. Lee and Elysian Fields started around 9:30 p.m. on November 21, according to a statement by the NOFD.

That fire began in a donut fryer and was soon contained. Firefighters remained on the scene for an hour and a half after the fire was extinguished, checking for hotspots and making sure the fire hadn’t spread into the walls, NOFD spokesman Capt. Edwin Holmes said.

At around 3:45 a.m. on November 22, firefighters were again called to the bakery to extinguish a fire that had engulfed the entire building. The second fire escalated to two alarms, bringing 37 firefighters to the scene.

Firefighters used aerial units to smother the fire from above after the bakery’s manager confirmed that no one should have been inside, Holmes said.

The cause of the second, larger fire is still under investigation. It was finally brought under control by around 7 a.m.

No injuries have been reported as a result of either incident.
