Brain-eating amoeba no longer a threat in St. John Parish

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH (WGNO) – Almost four months after water samples tested positive for a potentially deadly amoeba, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals announced that St. John’s water system is clean.

Water samples tested earlier this month for Naegleria fowleri came back negative for the amoeba.

“The St. John District 1 water system can now convert back to chloramine disinfection once prior notice is given to the customers,” DHH spokeswoman Ashley C. Lewis said Friday.

For the last several months residents in Reserve, Garyville and Mt. Airy have been advised to not drink the water coming from their faucets.

In October, a grand jury indicted two St. John Parish employees for not properly testing water samples and filing false reports.
