Haydel’s to fill Hubig’s pie void with new hand pies

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – With the fate of famed Hubig’s pies still up in the air (sources say Hubig’s pies may never return), another famous bakery is stepping in to fill the void.

Haydel’s Bakery announced on its Facebook page that the gourmet hand pie appeared on its original menu back in the 1960s. Starting next weekend, they’ll be back on the menu at the beloved Jefferson Highway bakery that’s known for its king cakes and pastries.

The picture on Haydel’s Facebook page shows apple and lemon flavors. It’s unclear whether more flavors will be available.

The pies from Haydel’s are similar to the Hubig’s fruit-filled pies that New Orleanians loved so much.

Hubig’s factory was destroyed by a fire in 2012, and although the company planned to reopen on Press Street, those plans never came to fruition.
