NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The Audubon Zoo is showing off its new baby lemurs.  Maki and Gidro, a female and male, were born on April 22.

Where did they get the names?  Well, Maki is French for lemur, and Gidro is how you say lemur in Malagasy.  The animals are only found in the wild on the island of Madagascar.

According to zoo workers, the animal is critically endangered in the wild due to habitat loss and hunting.

The zoo began its lemur breeding program in 2013 after the arrival of an adult female, Tahiri, and male, Gascar.

Workers say Tahiri is proving to be a great mom!
