NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Rapper Kevin Gates has cancelled his scheduled performance at this weekend’s Voodoo Music Festival.

Gates, who was facing a misdemeanor battery charge stemming from an August 2015 incident where he kicked a woman in the chest during a performance in Florida, received a 180 day sentence yesterday, according to Billboard.

Gates attempted to use Florida’s “stand your ground” law as a defense, saying that he felt threatened by the woman, but the judge saw things differently, Billboard reported.

Voodoo announced the cancellation in a short Facebook post today stating that Gates had to pull out “due to an unforeseen incarceration.”
