NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — It was a gruesome scene outside the Orleans Center Food Mart at the corner of Orleans Avenue and North Broad Street in the Treme. A woman was killed after being shot several times in a car, the windows shattered by the bullets.

A two-year-old boy was found unscathed in the backseat. His relation to the woman was not disclosed and he is now in the custody of a relative.

Yousif Hindi works at the Food mart and says the woman had been there that day. He and other employees recognize her.

“She was a regular,” he said. “She comes in I wanna say every other day, she jokes, she laughs.”

Hindi was in the back of the store when the shots rang out. When he realized what happened and who it happened to he was stunned.

“To not be able to see her… that’s another person gone, like that it’s really sad,” he said.

According to the Metropolitan Crime Commission’s latest data, there have been 86 homicides in New Orleans this year. The NOPD is asking for the public’s help solving them.

“If anyone has seen anything contact our homicide division or Crimestoppers at 822-1111,” said Lt. Kendrick Allen with the NOPD.
