BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – State lawmakers shelve a bill that would surgically castrate sex offenders.

The bill would’ve applied only to offenders whose victims were 13 years old or younger. State Senator Regina Barrow was the main supporter of the bill while other lawmakers voiced concern about the cost of the procedure for the state.

“The impact to a child’s life when they have been victimized by an adult, there is no cost that can substantiate what they have experienced,” said Sen. Barrow.

The bill was deferred Tuesday and lawmakers agreed to have the issue studied before bringing it back for the next legislative session.
